Democrat Explains Why He Voted Against Biden’s COVID-19 Relief Bill

The vote on the new COVID-19 relief package early Saturday was entirely along party lines, except for two Democrats who sided with Republicans against the bill. Reps. Jared Golden (D-Maine) and Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) broke ranks and voted against its approval. Golden argued the $1.9 trillion package includes too many measures that aren’t necessary to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. “During challenging times, the country needs its elected leaders to work together to meet the most urgent needs in their communities. This bill addresses urgent needs, and then buries them under a mountain of unnecessary or untimely spending. In reviewing the bill in its full scope, less than 20 percent of the total spending addresses core COVID challenges that are immediately pressing: funding for vaccine distribution and testing, and emergency federal unemployment programs.
