South Carolina Senate Passes Bill Adding Firing Squad to Execution Methods

The South Carolina Senate on March 2 passed a bill that added a firing squad as an alternative execution method for inmates on death row. A bipartisan group of lawmakers voted in favor of the bill in a 32-11 vote. The measure, which would allow the state to restart executions after nearly a decade, states that the firing squad method may be used if South Carolina can’t execute condemned inmates by way of lethal injection. According to The State, the South Carolina Senate voted to give the measure a second reading before it passes to the chamber. Court records show that a second reading has been completed. Currently, South Carolina isn’t able to place inmates on death row as its lethal injection drugs supply has expired, and it hasn’t been able to purchase more due to a shortage nationwide.
