Domestic extremists pose a serious threat to the military by seeking to recruit service members into their ranks, and joining the armed forces to boost their combat skills, according to a report from the Department of Defense published on March 2. “Military members are highly prized by these groups as they bring legitimacy to their causes and enhance their ability to carry out attacks,” warned the report (pdf), compiled last year at Congress’s request. “In addition to potential violence, white supremacy and white nationalism pose a threat to the good order and discipline within the military.” Although the report didn’t elaborate on how many white supremacists are current or former military members, or whether the threat is currently growing, it gave a number of examples of service members with extremist affiliations, and said the issue has become a growing concern in recent years.
