With the discovery of a new COVID-19 variant in Africa, pressure is mounting on the Liberal government to quickly adopt measures to prevent its spread to Canada. “With reports of the spread of a new COVID-19 variant, we have a small window of opportunity to act, and we must move now,” said Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole on Nov. 26. O’Toole wants to see a ban on non-essential travel to and from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini, mandatory screening at international airports, and mandatory quarantine for travellers from those countries, regardless of their vaccination status. “Lessons learned from earlier in the pandemic need to inform our actions today. Temporary measures to immediately secure our borders will keep Canadians safe and protect our economy,” O’Toole said in a statement.
