Chinese Researchers Built AI ‘Prosecutor’ That Can File Charges by Itself

Scientists in China said they have developed a machine that relies on artificial intelligence (AI) to charge offenders with crimes. Shanghai Pudong Procuratorate, the country’s largest prosecution office, built and tested the machine. So far, the machine is able to identify and file charges for the eight most common crimes in Shanghai—credit card fraud, running a gambling operation, reckless driving, intentional injury, obstructing official duties, theft, fraud, and picking a quarrel. The researchers said that, based on a written description of a case, the so-called AI “prosecutor” can file a charge with 97 percent accuracy. Professor Shi Yong, the project’s lead scientist, said the AI technology could reduce prosecutors’ daily workloads, allowing them to focus on more challenging work.
