German Electricity Producer Forced to Shut Down Power Plant After Running out of Coal

The global energy crisis forced one German electricity producer to shut down its power plant last week after it ran out of hard coal. Steag GmbH, which operates six large-scale hard coal plants in Germany, was forced to close its Bergkamen A plant located in the western part of the country due to shortages, a Steag spokesperson told Bloomberg. This is not the first time the Bergkamen A plant has been forced to halt. According to court filings, the plant was put on pause four times in September for as many as six days at a time due to external factors, according to Bloomberg. Three other German coal plants were also halted on Friday for maintenance. “We are short of hard coal,” said spokesman Daniel Muhlenfeld. “There is a strong demand for coal per se and secondly, there is a strong demand for transport by barge.
