Hungary scrambled fighter jets after an unidentified aircraft entered its airspace from Ukraine, according to the NATO country’s Ministry of Defense. The NATO Joint Air Operations Center in Hungary scrambled Saab JAS 39 Gripen jets after the ministry was “alerted to an aircraft arriving from Ukraine,” said a statement released on Monday. “The unidentified aircraft appeared on the radar in the eastern part of the country and headed for Slovakia,” said the statement. Both Slovakia, which borders Hungary to the north, and Hungary share a border with Ukraine. The jets “checked the indicated airspace, carried out a patrol task there, and [surveyed] the safety of the airspace” before they returned to the NATO base in Kecskemet, Hungary, said the Defense Ministry.
