“Get out and vote” is an exhortation that Garbant Piquant of Garner, North Carolina, took seriously. Records show that the 53-year-old Bahamas native has voted in every primary and general election from 2018 through 2020. But Piquant isn’t a U.S. citizen. He was arrested on Dec. 9 and charged with falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen in order to register to vote, voting by an alien, and passport fraud. According to a Dec. 13 statement by Michael Easley, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, when Piquant applied for a renewal of his U.S. passport, the Virginia birth certificate he had earlier used to establish his U.S. citizenship aroused suspicion. An investigation by the Department of State Diplomatic Security Service discovered that the birth certificate had never been issued by the state of Virginia.
