Ohio Police Officer Nicholas Reardon Cleared in Fatal Shooting of Teenager Ma’Khia Bryant

An Ohio police officer was cleared in a fatal shooting of a teenager, authorities announced March 11. A grand jury in Franklin County declined to indict Columbus police officer Nicholas Reardon, who shot teenager Ma’Khai Bryant on April 20, 2021. Reardon, who arrived with other officers in response to a 911 call, fired as Bryant wielded a knife and tried to assault a young woman. “Under Ohio law, the use of deadly force by a police officer is justified when there exists an immediate or imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to the officer or another,” special prosecutors Tim Merkle and Gary Shroyer said in a statement to news outlets announcing the grand jury decision.
