Ontario Changes COVID-19 Testing and Quarantine Rules

The Ontario government has changed eligibility for PCR testing and reduced the quarantine period for fully vaccinated people who have tested positive for COVID-19. Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Kieran Moore, announced the latest changes during a Dec. 30 press conference as the province experiences surging COVID-19 cases and the spread of the Omicron variant.  “Because of the rapid transmission of Omicron, many jurisdictions have had to adjust their testing strategies and Ontario is no different,” Moore said. Effective Dec. 31, publicly funded PCR tests will only be available to high-risk persons who are symptomatic or are at risk of severe illness from COVID-19. This includes workers, residents, and others in the highest-risk settings such as hospitals, long-term care, retirement homes, and congregate living settings.
