A bill that would require voters to submit photo identification at the polls passed its first vote in the Wyoming House of Representatives on March 1. The legislation, House Bill 75, requires voters to present either a Wyoming driver’s license, or identification card, tribal identification card, valid U.S. passport, U.S. military card, or Medicare insurance card when casting their ballots in elections. The bill wouldn’t apply to people voting by absentee ballot after registering in person or by mail. It still requires a further two votes to clear the House. If successful, it would then proceed to the Senate. Secretary of State Ed Buchanan, a backer of the legislation, hasn’t said that voter fraud is a problem in the state, but described the bill as a measure needed to prevent any future problems in the election process. “It’s a proactive piece of legislation.
